RoboCop 2014 Star Joel Kinnaman Insists His Movie Is Not A Remake; Says Director Padilha Made It More Interesting

Reinventing films has been the trend right now in the movie industry. Some were able to give their films new identity while others flopped. For Joel Kinnaman, who is going to star in the 2014 movie RoboCop, his film is not a remake. He said that this project, which will be shown on the first week of February next year, is totally different from the 1987 film.

Speaking to the SFX Magazine, the 34-year old actor said that what makes the new RoboCop unique from its older version is the fact that it is directed by Jose Padilha.

"When I first heard there was gonna be a RoboCop remake, I thought, 'Maybe I'll see that somewhere down the line. But it's nothing I'm interested in pursuing myself.' Then when I heard it was José Padilha that was gonna direct it, I became very interested. José has fought very hard and succeeded in making something that has a point of view, and a political and philosophical perspective," he said.

"It's a great responsibility. Especially in a world where there's a lot of remakes being made for cynical economic reasons. But having José as a director washed away those fears. The biggest respect you can pay to the original is to acknowledge it as a very intelligent movie, and try to make something intelligent to follow it up with, and not just replay old catchphrases. We kept one or two as a wink to the fans, but we did not try to remake the movie."

Looking at the plot of the two movies, they indeed seems so different. The 1987 film was opened by the words "in the near future " while the 2014 version opened with "In the year 2008. So, that somehow makes sense.

Aside from the plot, what you should watch out for in RoboCop 2014 is its star-studded cast. Aside from Kinnaman, who is currently seen in the TV series "The Killing," the film also features Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
