Rivers led the Celtics to two NBA finals and help revived the franchise when Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen came to Boston. When the big three broke up and Pierce and Garnett were traded from the Celtics to the Brooklyn Nets, Rivers left to sign with the L.A. Clippers. In June, Rivers was traded to the Clippers in exchange for a first-round pick in 2015. He had three years remaining on his contract with the Celtics, but did not want to be part of a rebuilding season and now he has L.A. in first place with a 14-8 record.

"It will be very nice for me," Rivers told ESPN.com. "I put nine years in there, nine wonderful years. So that'll be really cool."

The current Celtics team is in first place of the Atlantic division with a 10-13 record as rookie head coach Brad Stevens has his team playing much better than people expected.

Avery Bradley scored a team-high 22 points as Boston's three-game win streak came to an end in the team's first matchup against Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, which happened to take place one night before the return of Rivers.

"They played great tonight. Played really hard, really together," Stevens said. "They took us out of what we wanted to do."
