'Sandman' Movie Rights Acquired By Joseph-Gordon Levitt; After 'Don Jon' Actor-Director Takes A Big Step Forward

“Sandman” by Neil Gaiman will now be brought to the big screen by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. His critical and box-office success has earned the trust of Warner Brothers.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is determined to establish himself as a Hollywood A-lister. After the success of his directorial debut “Don Jon” he has struck a deal to produce and star in one of the most esteemed franchises.

The concept for the movie version of the Neil Gaiman comic book classic was culled from a pitch by David Goyer. However, JGL has confirmed that he will actually hire another writer for the actual script.
The final confirmation was tweeted by the “Don” himself:

The Sandman series is not easily confined as a genre. It is the realm of dreams, so the ambience can shift from fantasy to horror. It is a challenging project, but this is the big step forward the prolific actor-director is aspiring for.

The main character of the series is Morpheus, the personification of Dreams. Not to be confused with Laurence Fishburne’s character in the “Matrix” series, but the concept of ‘dreaming awake’ is not too far off.

For solid Gaiman and Sandman fans, the identity of the writer means a lot. Would it be Goyer? Since he made the storyline for the movie, it would be logical to write the script himself. However, Goyer must be tied up with the Man of Steel sequel. With all the changes and additions that Warner Brothers is implementing on that project, Goyer may not have time for this project, which is by no means a side project.

The tweet might give us some clues. The hashtag #neilhimself can only mean one thing.

Perhaps this major project is Warner Brothers’ way of making up to JGL. In the final installment of the “Dark Knight” trilogy, it was very obvious that he was being groomed to be the successor. However, the studio has chosen to take an entirely different path, and Ben Affleck is now Batman.
Now, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a rare chance to establish himself as the Lord of the Dream World, as his own dreams come true.
