Beginning with a Bang, What It Means To Have a Breakout Debut Year: BTS Year End Review

BTS didn't officially debut in the Kpop music scene until halfway through the 2013 year, but they have definitely left their mark already. After winning their first award, having their showcase overseas, selling out official merchandise in less than 2 minutes, and releasing 2 albums, it is safe to say they have a bright future in Kpop.

On January 20th, BigHit released a Youtube video titled "School Of Tears" by BangtanSonyeondan. This wasn't the first hint BigHit gave of their new group, but it was the first full length song. The song was a cover of Kendrick's "Drank" and featured RapMonster, SUGA, and Jin.

A little over two weeks later, another video was released titled "Graduation Song" by BangtanSonyeondan, which turned out to be a cover of Wiz Kalifa's "Young, Wild and Free". This time the song featured 3 more members, J-Hope, Jimin, and Jungkook, leading many to believe the group would have 6 members.

But even with these two releases, it wasn't until May 26th that the first official debut teaser was released. The video clip contained no images of members, nor a debut date. It wasn't until June 2nd that an image was released, only many fans were surprised due to the released image, V's, being of a member that hadn't been in either of the previously released MVs. The very next day Jin, Jimin, and Jungkook's images were released, followed on the 6th by J-Hope, SUGA, and RapMonster's images, as well as their first MV trailer and a tracklist for their single 2 COOL 4 SKOOL.

After releasing a second teaser video for their title song "No More Dream" on June 9th, BTS officially debuted on June 12th with the release of their MV and single as well as their debut showcase. 1 month later on July 16th they released the highly anticipated MV for a second song from their debut single, "We Are Bulletproof Pt II".

In August, after members dropped many hints about a comeback, an official teaser, August 26th, and teaser pics, August 29th, were released for their upcoming Extended Play O, R U L8, 2?. The EP was officially released on September 11th along with the music video for their title song "N.O". This corresponded nicely with the start of BTS's reality show on MTV: Rookie King. The 8 episode long sketch show was used to allow fans to see another side of BTS, and though the show didn't top it's rating spot, it helped introduce more fans to the already popular rookie group.

November was a big month for the young group, as they performed at the MelOn Music Awards and won Best New Artist alongside Lim Kim. They also released the first set of official merchandise, which ended up selling out in less than 30 minutes. Their popularity was also established in December with their successful Japanese Showcase on December 7th and the opening of their fanclub on December 10th, though it was slightly marred by SUGA having to leave Japan early in order to have an emergency appendectomy. However, on December 18th, BigHit still rounded off the year nicely with an acapella version of Santa Claus is Comin' to Town featuring Jo Kwon (2AM) JooHee (8Eight), Lim JeongHee, and Jungkook and RapMon of BTS.

Of course, no year is complete without a little drama, which was provided for BTS through underground rapper B-Free. Suga and RapMon were invited to a Hip Hop event due to their previous work in the underground rap scene. It was during the interview portion that B-Free started to tease, aka verbally attack, Suga and RapMon for their decision to leave the underground scene and take the "easy route" to success by becoming idols. While both boys kept their cool at the time, B-Free kept digging at them until the MC managed to steer the conversation in another direction. This led to RapMon releasing an "answer" via the group's sound cloud. Though the song will never be released, due to it containing harsh language, it shows that while the boys have left the scene, they still have the skills necessary to compete.

Over all, BTS used their official 6 months wisely. They released 2 albums, the second of which peaked in the top 100 albums chart, had 2 extremely successful showcases, 1 in Korea and 1 in Japan, and proved they already have a devoted and growing fanbase. One can only wait in anticipation for what 2014 brings for these outstanding rookies.
