Harvard Student Eldo Kim To Face 5 Years In Prison For Sending Bomb Threat? Student Admits His Only Reason Is To Skip Final Examination

Harvard student Eldo Kim, 20, only wanted to get out of a final examination which he didn't prepare for but the Harvard bomb threat that he created could warrant him 5 years in prison. Kim admitted to FBI that he sent the Harvard University bomb threat so that people would evacuate the buildings.

At about 8:30 in the morning, Kim sent an unnamed e-mail to Harvard officials as well as campus policemen warning them about shrapnel bombs in four of the university buildings. "Be quick for they will go off soon," said Kim's e-mail.

Scared by what they saw, university officials immediately announced that students and workers should leave four properties: Emerson, Sever, and Thayer halls as well as the nearby Science Center. The evacuation took place just before the examinations started.

Law enforcement groups, bomb expert, and international media outfits went to the university. Examinations were postponed for it took nearly a day to check the properties for potential explosives.

Instead of going home for winter break, 20-year-old Eldo Kim was arrested Tuesday and held overnight on federal bomb hoax charges. He is scheduled to appear in US District Court on Wednesday, according to US Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz's office.

Kim reportedly used a newly-created anonymous e-mail address and an Internet Protocol to send his e-mail warning with the subject "bombs placed around campus." After sending the e-mail, he went to the venue of his examination. "According to Kim, upon hearing the alarm, he knew that his plan had worked," written in Kim's affidavit.

Harvard officials acknowledged the prompt response of law enforcers. They are likewise saddened that a student caused "significant disruption" in the educational community:  "We are aware that a member of our community has been arrested in relation to this matter and are saddened by the details alleged in the criminal complaint."

After being arrested for one night, Eldo Kim has been released on a $100,000 bond. There is likewise a federal judge order for him to stay away from the campus.

The consequences of Kim's Harvard bomb threat are not yet known. Apart from $250,000 fine, the bomb-hoax charge carries a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison.
