Korean-Born Artist Lisa Park Uses The Power of Her Mind To Make Music; Brainwaves Manipulate Water (Video)

Lisa Park is a conceptual artist who is using the power of her mind to make music. It's not mentalism and she's not a Kpop star, but her music will get into your head. Park's scientific performance piece is called "Euonia," which means "beautiful thinking" in Greek.

Lisa Park is a New York artist who was raised in Seoul, South Korea. She uses the power of her mind to manipulate musically tuned bowls of water. Lisa uses a NeuroSky MindWave headset. The device measures frequencies of Park's brain activity (Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma, Theta). Data from Lisa Park's brainwaves is collected by an EEG headset which then translates it towards metal dishes half filled with water. The dishes sit on top of five speakers which Lisa correlated with the emotions: sadness, anger, hatred, desire, and happiness. Park can then make the dishes vibrate in various patterns according to her brain activity. This goes through the speakers in real-time modulated acoustic vibrations.

On her website Park writes, "'Eunoia' is a performance that uses my brainwaves -- collected via EEG sensor-- to manipulate the motions of water. It derives from the Greek word 'ey' (well) + 'nous' (mind) meaning 'beautiful thinking.' EEG is a brainwave detecting sensor. It measures frequencies of my brain activity (Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma, Theta) relating to my state of consciousness while wearing it. The data collected from EEG is translated in realtime to modulate vibrations of sound with using software programs. EEG sends the information of my brain activity to Processing, which is linked with Max/MSP to receive data and generate sound from Reaktor."

In her art, Park wants to create "intimate environments and experiences that trigger emotional states and reflections." The artist uses "technology to engage and evoke human emotion rather than alienation and create art that empowers the public through awareness of them."

Park mixed technology with her Fine Art background to perform a trilogy of works: Eunoia, Le Violon d'Lisa, and Obsession is sad Passion. She uses heart-rate and brain wave sensor sensors that monitor her physiological and psychological state.

Lisa Park got her B.F.A. in Fine Arts Media from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California. Park also received an M.P.S. from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
