NBA Trade Rumors - Rajon Rondo, Pau Gasol Stay WIth Their Teams; No Trades, Except For Each Other

Both teams have spoken. As of this time, Pau Gasol and Rajon Rondo will not be traded.

The Lakers have made their announcement amid the publicized feud between Pau  Gasol and coach Mike D'Antoni. The Spanish center stated that he is 'uncomfortable' with the current system and the coach is not 'using him in the right way.' Gasol used to be the most dominant big man, and as late as 2012, in the Beijing Olympics, Pau has shown the capacity to dominate.

After two straight games where Pau regained some semblance of his former self, (16 points, 10 rebounds vs Atlanta, 21 points, 9 rebounds vs Memphis), the Lakers have decided to stand down.

ESPN LA reported that sources with inside access to the team have confirmed that Pau Gasol is "off the table."

Meanwhile, his former 'nemesis' on the team, Mike D'Antoni, has been sympathetic with Pau's woes. After their win against the hapless Memphis Grizzlies, he states:

"I just think people go through periods of slumps where you question things. Like I said, we were out of whack. Different things go on. But Pau's an All-Star, he's one of the best players in the league, he worked through it and he's back to normal."

Meanwhile, their rivals on the East, the Boston Celtics, also stated that they are not trading All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo who is set to return from injury in the coming weeks.

From the Boston Globe: "Rondo is coming off an injury and I think people know how much we love Rondo, so I don't expect anybody to inquire, quite honestly. People know that Rondo is a big part of our future and that we're not going to trade him. Guys that are starting All-Star players just don't come around. The special players, the transcendent players in our league, are very difficult to find and acquire. We believe Rondo is one of those guys. He's a very special player. We value him a great deal."

However, there is a possibility that these endeared figures of championship teams past may eventually traded for each other. Despite being basketball's most bitter rivalry, they may forget the past and look at the future.

A trade sending Pau Gasol and Chris Kaman to the Celtics in exchange for Rajon Rondo and Gerald Wallace works for both teams. The Celtics will get $ 22 million in salary cap space without disrupting their newly built chemistry. The Lakers will get the star that they're aspiring for in 2014. The downside is that they have to take Gerald Wallace's contract that will extend to 2015.

Perhaps the only thing that's preventing this trade is the return of Rajon Rondo. Both teams want to see how he returns and estimate his current value before making a move.
