"Grand Piano" has a premise that can raise a lot of eyebrows. Tom Selznick is a classical piano virtuoso who will die if he plays one wrong note.

It's described by Screencrush as "Speed" with a piano or "Phone Booth" in a concert hall. A sniper has threatened Tom (played by Elijah Wood) that he will shoot (complete with the laser sight for effect) if he fails to make the perfect concerto.

This sounds like a gimmicky concept, and it will be met with 'been there, done that' remarks, but the film was a sensation in the London Film Festival this year. The Hollywood Reporter gave this review:

"Mira's pacy high-concept genre piece is more Brian De Palma than Hitchcock. But it has just enough stylistic swagger to excuse its utterly preposterous plot."

Earning a fresh tomato from Rotten Tomatoes, reviewer Todd Gilchrist of Indiewire raves:

"Probably the best Brian De Palma movie he never made, "Grand Piano" expands the boundaries of single-location, real-time mysteries like "Phone Booth" and "Panic Room" with a brilliantly simple concept and nimble, elegant style."

Directed by Eugenio Mira, the film is a co-production from both Spain and the US. The movie will be shown on March 7, 2014. Most reviewers recommend it even with the dated premise. Style, great acting and directorial work make it a worthwhile view.
