Comet ISON A Letdown? There's Always Doomsday Asteroid Apophis; Coming to Earth in 2036

The Comet of the Century, Comet ISON, died all too soon. It was this year's James Dean of comets. It sped across the cosmos like James Dean raced in his Corvette. But, like Icarus, Comet ISON flew too close to the sun and burned out before it could shine in the earth's skies.

Don't fret, skywatchers, there are always things to look for. In 2036 a Ukrainian astronomer promises the earth will see a cosmic flareup the likes of which we've never seen. And will never see again. It may very well be the last thing the earth sees. The Apophis asteroid. He's calling it a Doomsday Asteroid.

Astronomers are speculating that the Apophis asteroid has a good chance of hitting Earth in 2036.

Asteroid Apophis was first discovered in 2004. Astronomers projected the apophis asteroid would have close call with Earth in 2029. The Apophis asteroid has an even closer approach in 2036.

A team of Ukrainian astronomers discovered the massive Apophis asteroid, 2013 TV135. The Apophis asteroid is about a quarter-mile wide,

The recently discovered asteroid 2013 TV135, with an estimated diameter of 400 meters, was deemed a doomsday asteroid after the Ukrainian observatory that discovered it projected a collision course with Earth in 2032. NASA debunked the threat of asteroid 2013 TV135.

NASA says the chances of asteroid 2013 TV135 hitting Earth are one in 63,000. The Apophis asteroid was originally estimated at one in 40, or 2.7 percent.

The Apophis asteroid is big enough to destroy an entire region or set off tsunamis if it were to hit an ocean. Astronomers estimate the explosion would equate to 2,500 megatons of TNT.

Russia has been hit by asteroids two times in the last century. The Russian deputy prime minister has been pushing for an anti-asteroid defense system.

Ukrainian scientists earlier reported that there is a chance an asteroid could collide with Earth in 2032. The resulting explosion would be 50 times greater than the most powerful nuclear bomb.

Ukrainian astronomers say the asteroid is a 1,345-foot rock that will either pass closely by the Earth of collide with the planet on August 26, 2032.

Scientists at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in southern Ukraine discovered the asteroid last week.  The asteroid is passing through the Camelopardalis, also known as the Giraffe, constellation.

Astronomer Gennady Borisov said "I was watching the Giraffe constellation, monitoring it as part of our comet search program. The first observations show that it moves quickly and is relatively close."

The asteroid was confirmed by astronomers in Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and Russia. The asteroid was added to the Minor Planet Center's list of potentially hazardous asteroids.

If the asteroid hits Earth the explosion would be the equivalent of 2,500 megatons of TNT. That is 50 times greater than the most powerful nuclear bomb ever used.

Astronomers estimate the chance of a direct hit at one in 63,000. Which makes the treat minor. The scientists belive the asteroid will miss Earth by about 1.7 million kilometers.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin still announced on Twitter that the asteroid would pose a "great challenge for our national space industry." Rogozin has been promoting the the development of an anti-asteroid defense systems. Former Prime Minister Lembit Opik formed a similar system in England.

Don Yeoman, manager of Nasa's Near-Earth Object Profram Office, said "The current probability of no impact in 2032 [is] about 99.998 per cent. "This is a relatively new discovery. With more observations, I fully expect we will be able to significantly reduce, or rule out entirely, any impact probability for the foreseeable future."
