Best and Worst of ‘2013 SBS Gayo Daejun’

There were 34 groups and individuals totaling to 125 superstars performing on "2013 SBS Gayo Daejun" which aired on December 29th. It included rookies such as VIXX, BTS, and Ladies' Code as well as established big names such as Girls' Generation, Big Bang, 2PM, and EXO. Yoon Jong Shin, Park Ji Yoon, and Lim Kim represented record label Mystic89, while veterans such as Tiger JK, Lim Chang Jung, Verbal Jint, Lee Seung Chul, Lee Hyori and Park Jin Young brought excitement and nostalgia. 15&'s Park Ji Min teamed with fellow K-Pop Star debutee Baek A-Yeon for a duet performance to remember. It was an amazing show, but it certainly had its up and downs.

One of the best moments of the show was the music drama "Miracle". The protagonists were 2PM's Wooyoung, SHINee Taemin, A-Pink Naeun, and Girl's Day Minah. Almost every idol star made a cameo appearance. Some of the parts were just terribly bad because of the bad acting, but the overall content of the drama made up for the lack of acting prowess of some of the stars. It was parody that combined popular SBS dramas "The Heirs" and "The Master's Sun". The popular lines of those dramas were reenacted by idol stars, and some of the singers who doubled as actors in the dramas returned to play those roles again. EXO, VIXX, and K-Will's acting was also a very fun surprise. It had a lot of meaning in that it was a content exclusive to the show.

Nine Muses's reinterpretation of Jo Yong Pil's "Bounce" was also very refreshing. The stage was a collaboration between Nine Muses and ZE:A, their label mates. The music was remixed to a trance/club beat, but the fun beat of the original song remained and made for a memorable performance. It was "classic Nine Muses" in that the stage was sexy without being overly so. Nine Muses also shined while singing with veteran singer Lee Seung Chul with his song "Come Closer".

Hip Hop collaborations was another bright spot int he show. Baechigi and Dynamic Duo put on a show with a perfect collaboration stage, and Verbal Jint and Bumpkey didn't disappoint with a followup stage with the song "Play With It". San-E rapped with rhymes that summarized the year in Kpop by mentioning EXO's "Growl", 2NE1's "Missing You", and TOP's "Doom Dada". Their stage ended with a unique remix of "Just the Two of Us". Tiger JK, Yoon Mi Rae, Bizzy, and Eun Ji Won also had a collaboration stage with Block-B's Zico, B.A.P's Bang Yong Guk, B1A4's Baro, and BTS's Rap Monster. It was an interesting mix of the old and new guard of hip hop.

Speaking of old guard and new guard, Lee Hyori and CL's stage was something else entirely. Lee Hyori sang her hit song "Miss Korea" as an acoustic song and featured all 30 Miss Korea contestants. CL then came onto the stage, and they sang "Bad Girl" and "The Baddest Female" together. CL's wild rapping and Lee Hyori's sexy performances made the stage an absolute pleasure to behold.

What about the worst? One of the lowest points of the show was the opening stage. IT was supposed to be a fun collaboration between 25 idol group members, but it was just terribly awkward. It was a true all-star lineup with SHINee Minho, SHINEee Taemin, 2PM Junho, 2PM Nichkhun, BEAST Yo-Seob, BEAST Doo-Joon, Infinite L, Infinite Woohyun, B1A4 Sandeul, B1A4 Jin Young, EXO D.O, EXO Baekhyun, K-Will, Kara Gyuri, 4MINUTE Hyuna, 4MINUTE Ga-yoon, f(x) Luna, f(x) Victoria, SECRET Sunhwa, SECRET Hyosung, Miss A Suzy, Miss A Jia, Rainbow Jaekyung, Girl's Day Mina, and A-Pink Eunji. However, from the beginning of Eunji's part the sound started to fade in and out. Because of this, Suzy was unable to come into the song at the right beat. Everything unravelled from there. Also, the camera director was unable to focus in on the person that is singing, instead opting to show how many people are on the stage.

The technical woes that plagued the opening stage continued throughout the show. Crayon Pop's music literally echoed for a good while during their performance. Park Jin Young had to alter his entire choreography to /compensate for the broken stage lift. Girls' Generation's leader, Taeyeon, seem to continually fiddle with her in-ear monitor while singing "Express 999". Not only that, but the camera failed on multiple occasions to grab the amazing performances put on by the groups, instead opting to show the audience or the stage from afar.

The all-in-all greatest moment came as Crayon Pop was singing their megahit "Bar Bar Bar". When they started to perform with the '5-cylinder Engine Dance', the fans behind them began to dance along with them, standing up and sitting down with Crayon Pop - only these were not Crayon Pop's fans but fans of EXO, VIXX and BEAST. It was a clear reminder that music creates space for festivity without adherence to a particular group.
