Distance finally drove a wedge between Latino singer Ricky Martin and his boyfriend Carlos Gonzales Abella after about five years of being together.

"Ricky and Carlos have mutually agreed to end their relationship but continue to be united by friendship and their shared experiences," a representative for the singer said in a statement sent to various media outlets on Thursday.

The two dated in 2008 but Ricky Martin only confessed his sexuality to the public in 2010. They are parents to Matteo and Valentino, the 5-year-old twins conceived in August 2008 through a surrogate mother.

The news came less of a shock for the Twitter followers of Martin as he hinted the breakup on his account towards the end of 2013.

He tweeted:"Changes oh changes. So, you are waiting to be ready??? Watch out, you can be waiting all your life. #GODoit ;0)"

Then Martin went to the Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort in Cancun, Mexico alone for a scheduled performance there on New Year's Eve.

According to People, distance was the main reason for the breakup.

"They've spent very little time together and have grown apart. They've been on the outs for a while now," the article noted.

Ricky Martin was clearly in love with his boyfriend based on the interview he did with Vanity Fair in April 2012.

He said that he grew as a person with Carlos Gonzalez Abella by his side: "Complexity, understanding, and, at the same time, freedom, not being afraid that your partner is judging you. That is what I have found with Carlos."

Martin said that they had different interests initially-with Martin wanting to be a father and Abella wanting a boyfriend-but they raised the kids together. Abella also stood by his man when Martin came out through his website in 2010

Ricky Martin added in the same interview that his boyfriend has a "really strong personality" and that "he's nobody's puppet."
