Oscars 2014 Nominees Announced; Nine Films Vie For Best Picture In One Of The Tightest Races Ever!

The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the nominees for the 86th Academy Awards.

For the Best Picture Category, nine films have made the cut. For the other major awards for acting performances, they have the usual five nominees.

"Gravity" and "American Hustle" are the leaders with 10 nominations each including Best Picture and Best Director."12 Years A Slave" has nine.

Scarlett Johansson was not nominated for her voice performance in Spike Jonze's "Her." Former Music Video director Spike Jonze was also not nominated for Best Director, although "Her" is in contention for Best Picture. She won awards for the roles abroad, but the Golden Globes refused to consider nominating a voice performance. It was hoped, but not really anticipated, that the Academy would see it differently.

Martin Scorsese was nominated for Best Director for the seventh time. His muse, Leonardo DiCaprio is also nominated for Best Actor, Jonah Hill for Best Supporting Actor and the movie for Best Picture.

Tom Hanks failed to get his sixth nomination for Best Actor. The Coen Brothers "Inside LLewyn Davis" was also snubbed. Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson and Robert Redford for "All Is Lost" (no nominations for Director and Picture) would also be the snubs that immediately come to mind.
