Sacramento Kings To Start Accepting Bitcoin As Payment For Their Merchandise; Team Also Expected To Wear Google Glass During Games

When Vivek Ranadive and his partners purchased the Sacramento Kings last season, their mission is not just to build a winning team, they want to create the most technology driven franchise in the league and in the whole world of sports. This 2014, the Sacramento-based team is making a big leap by becoming the first in NBA to accept bitcoins as payment for their merchandise.

Payment processor BitPay announced that Kings and NBA fans can now buy goods from Sacramento using bitcoins, a peer-to-peer payment system and digital currency. The deal was completed last week at the CES after the team realized that they "they could be the first sports team in the US to take Bitcoin."

"We are maniacally focused on creating the most seamless experience for our fans in all facets," Ranadivé said in a statement.

"With BitPay, we are able to implement a technology that allows our fans to make Kings-related purchases without physically reaching into their wallets."

Bitcoins has been a popular currency among internet users and online-based markets. It is now officially used by WordPress, Reddit ,and OkCupid. Last month, a California car dealer sold a Tesla electric car for bitcoins.

BitPay will process transactions made by Sacramento fans on behalf of the team.  It will accept virtual funds and pay the Kings in cash.

Bitcoin is not the only high-tech feature that Sacramento Kings. On Thursday, the team announced that they will be using Google Glass on their game against the Indiana Pacers on January 24.

"Testing complete! Kings ready to Go Glass on 1/24 vs the Pacers. See the game from an entirely new perspective," Ranadivé said.

It is not clear yet how they are going to use Google Glass but according to sources, players will likely wear them during warmups and introductions. Assistant coaches will also wear them during games for analytical purpose.
