Are Holograms The New Media Frontier? YG Goes All In, Other Entertainment Companies To Follow

Can holograms open up a new market for K-Pop music? So far the only true sources of revenue for big management companies such as YG Entertainment or SM Entertainment were album sales, concerts, apparel and various character goods. What if K-pop stars could perform on the stage as a hologram so that their physical presence is not necessary? It may please the millions of K-Pop fans all over the world simultaneously - that's the concept, anyhow.

YG established hologram content distributor NIK in collaboration with media companies KT and District and opened up KLive in Seoul. KLive is a concert hall designed specifically for the use of holograms.

It's not simply that the artist is performing in front of the fans - it's a true 4-D experience where fans can enter the five-side stage and feel as though they are in the music video or the concert. The horse racing circuit and the subway of PSY's "Gangnam Style" has recreated so that fans can feel as though they are a part of the scene, while Big Bang's "Fantastic Baby" was re-imagined as a sci-fi action film that the attendees can take part in.

The maximum capacity is about 240 per showing. KLive plans to hold three hologram concerts per artist and expect about 1000 people to attend every day. NIK is also planning on expanding to Japan, China, and Jeju Island.

Producing the hologram requires more touch-up and design work than actual filming. For PSY's "Gangnam Style", PSY filmed for two days with computer graphic artists working on the hologram conversion for three months. Currently two songs each from PSY, Big Bang, and 2NE1 is available for showing. They are working on producing holograms in collaboration with FNC entertainment and DSP Media for artists such as CNBlue, FTIsland, and Rainbow.

KT representative stated, "We're not going to limit the content to YG artists. We plan to eventually display many more artists from different entertainment companies via hologram. We're also working on Chinese artists' holograms as well. We may even be able to put together a K-Pop remix concert solely by hologram."

SM Entertainment is another major entertainment company that is seeking to enter the hologram industry. SM is looking to open a concert hall that exclusively shows SM artists through hologram. They are already operating a large theater in Universal Studios Japan and planning to open another such theater at Seoul's COEX Convention and Exhibition Center.
