The Montreal Canadiens (27-16-5) have split the season-series vs the Toronto Maple Leafs (24-20-5) at one a piece. The Maple Leafs won 4-3 in Montreal, but the Canadiens won 4-2 when they went back to the Bell Centre in November. Montreal has a six-point lead for third place in the division, which is a guaranteed playoff berth at the end of the season, but Toronto is heating up right now. After struggling following the Winter Classic victory, the Leafs lost four straight. They've since won three in a row.

Phil Kessel, who scored his team-leading 22nd goal Wednesday, has two goals and six assists in his last four games.

"It's always nice when you're having some success," Joffrey Lupul, who scored for the sixth time in seven shootout attempts Wednesday, told NHL.com. "The game's easier when you're scoring and having success."

Toronto won its ninth shootout victory of the season with the win over the Sabres after going 0-5 last season.

"Obviously, we're fortunate this year that our record in the shootout is a real, strong positive for our hockey club," coach Randy Carlyle said. "There's been a lot of extra points gained by it."

In the Canadiens last eight games, Montreal has lost, won, lost won, etc. Carey Price is coming off what he called one of his best of the season. Price faced 38 shots through two periods Thursday against Ottawa and finished with 40 saves in the 5-4 overtime win.

"The reason for tonight's win is Carey Price. ... I thought he was extraordinary," coach Michel Therrien, who has confirmed Price will start against Toronto, told EPSN.com.
