Celebrity Spotlight Interview with Journalist/Stylist David Yi

Describe who David Yi is in 5 words.
David Yi is a writer, editor, dreamer, stylist, and eater. Heavy eater.

You wear a lot of different jackets in the world of journalism and fashion. Tell us about them.
Other than shoes or accessories, my closet is definitely composed of outerwear pieces. I love any and all jackets and coats that are functional but also unique. Some pieces I find at thrift stores here and there like a floral bomber I found in the East Village. Another one is a very beautiful cobalt trench with leather sleeves I purchased at Marc Jacobs. I'm loving this buffalo plaid coat I purchased at Mackage--I found it in the women's section but it was too handsome to pass up!

What's your current project these days?
I'm a writer at heart and so that is what I am focusing on these days. I write for the Wall Street Journal's "Off Duty" section where I focus on menswear. I also write for the New York Times. There are many columns I'm working on for Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, and Details as well. I'm a lover of fashion but at the crux of my soul I am a fan of people: meeting them and getting to know who they are, inside and out.

What's the dream?
My dream is to definitely create my own brand and universe. I want to focus on writing this year but expand more into broadcast as well. I'm also currently writing my first book, so look out for that!

As a journalist who has interviewed all kinds of stars including 2NE1's CL, what's your take on K-pop music?
Korean pop music will always have a soft spot in my heart. It's the genre that empowered me as a child growing up without diversity in suburban Colorado. I think Kpop is so catchy, fun, so high fashion, and visuals are amazing. Will Kpop take over America? I've pondered this for a long time. While Kpop may be the biggest genre of music in Asia I don't think it will cross over to the American market anytime soon. I'd even argue that Kpop was at its peak in 2012--a fact that even industry vets would agree with.

Who is your favorite K-pop artist and why?
I will always be a fan of originality. And to me that was SES. They were the purveyors of girl groups and were the ones who finally proved that girl groups could become huge--and trump the pretty boys of the industry. "Dreams Come True" and "I'm Your Girl" will forever be classics.

If you could be any K-pop artist's stylist, who would it be and why?
I think I would probably be a young artist's stylist. I love developing style. I know the obvious answer would be G Dragon, the Big Bang crew or 2NE1. But they're established. I wouldn't want to intrude on what they're already doing. I'd really love to work with someone like say, a Henry at SM or JYP's new boyband.

Any last words for our Kpopstarz readers?
Kpopstarz readers, I'm as enthused as you are regarding Korean pop music and I hope that you continue to support the genre. Please check out my Instagram and Twitter/Instagram to peer into my random life: @seoulcialite. Have an amazing 2014!
