Wolverine Star Hugh Jackman Cast As ‘Blackbeard’ On Joe Wright's 'Peter Pan' Movie Adaptation; New Film Bumps Batman Vs. Superman Release Date

Wolverine star Hugh Jackman is reportedly set to play the role of a villain in Joe Wright's Peter Pan origin story movie "Pan."

According to cinemablend.com, Jackman is currently holding the record of playing a "single live-action superhero character" in several films. The 45-year old Aussie has maintained his individuality and avoid being typecast despite playing the role of Wolverine for seven different movies in X-Men franchise including the "Wolverine" spinoff.

Last year, he was spectacular in portraying Jean Valjean in Tom Hooper's "Les Miserables." He managed to wow the critics in his performance in "Prisoners." And now, he is rumored to star as Blackbeard, a villain in "Pan." If everything went well with the negotiations, this would be Jackman's first movie to play as a villain.

However, the role of Blackbeard was reportedly first offered to "Skyfall" and "No Country for Old Men" villain Javier Bardem. Warner Bros. first approached the Spanish actor according to the reports made by Deadline. Nevertheless, Bardem allegedly turned down the offer, thus making Warner Bros. offer the said villainous role to Wolverine star Hugh Jackman.

Warner Bros. nor Wolverine star Hugh Jackman has yet to release any official statement on the issue, but with the recent development from the company, moving its highly-anticipated Batman vs. Superman release date for 2016 and replacing it with 'Pan' on July 17, 2015, it's most likely that we'll be hearing the casting news in the near future.

"Pan" is described by Variety as a Peter Pan origin story, where it would focus on the beginnings of the young orphan named Peter Pan. The script penned by Jason Fuschs will feature how Pan was brought to Neverland and how he started a revolution against the evil pirates, headed by Blackbeard. The movie will also tackle on Thinker Bell and Captain Hook's beginnings.

For those of you who are wondering about Captain Hook's role on the film, Variety reports that Hook will "serve as Pan's close ally before turning bad."

Warners is now aiming for its share of the early May box office. The studio is also pushing production on the movie to the second quarter; it was initially slated to begin shooting this winter.

"We are happy to take advantage of these coveted summer dates, which are perfect for two of our biggest tentpole releases," Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution said in a statement. "We share the fans' excitement to see DC Comics' most popular figures, Superman and Batman, together on the big screen for the first time, which will now be arriving in theatres in May 2016.  Peter Pan has delighted people of every generation for more than a century, so we are thrilled to bring him back to the screen next summer for today's moviegoers."

Although, this would be the first major casting news for "Pan," this is most certainly not the last. Warner Bros. is about to schedule an open casting call for the lead role, and is reportedly on the lookout for "an actress in her mid-20s to play Tiger Lily," Peter Pan's supposed love interest.

Hollywood bankable actor Ryan Gosling is also being linked in the film. He is reportedly being considered to play the role of Captain Hook in preparation for a possible sequel.
