FIFA 2014 World Cup Might Cancel Games In Curitiba For Being Late; Another Stadium In Brazil Puts Football Event In Peril

The 2014 FIFA World Cup is just five months away and yet, this year's host seems to be not ready for the world's biggest football event.

FIFA Sectary General Jerome Valcke has expressed his disappointment over Brazilian organizers for their failure to complete the construction of the stadiums according to the schedule. He warned of an emergency regarding the games and threatened one of the cities that they will not have any games if they fail to make it to the February 18 deadline.

Curitiba is one city that is Valcke is hitting at. He visited the site and described the situation there as "delicate" and "very complicated."

"As you can imagine, the current situation of the stadium is not something we really appreciate," the FIFA official told reporters.

"The stadium is not only late, it is very, very late.

"If you don't have a stadium you can't have games," he added. "It is an emergency situation."

The field is set to make its FIFA World Cup debut on January 23 and will welcome 2010 champion FIFA Spain which will battle Australia. Other pairs to clash at Curitiba are Honduras and Ecuador, Russia and Algeria, and Iran and Nigeria.

"FFA has noted FIFA's comments that Curitiba's World Cup stadium is only 90 per cent complete and missed the initial December 31 deadline and will seek advice from FIFA on the issue," an FFA spokesman said in a statement.

"The prospect of matches being moved from Curitiba raises serious concerns, particularly for Socceroo fans who have secured tickets and made flight and hotel bookings.

"We hope the measures announced will ensure that Curitiba's readiness will be confirmed by the 18 February deadline."

Another stadium's hosting gig in limbo is the Arena da Baixada in the southern part of the country because of delays in refurbishments. The Corinthians Arena which is due to host the opening match in Sao Paulo is also in big trouble because it might fail to open right in time for the opening match a fatal accident set construction a couple of months ago
