Park Jin Young Vs Yang Hyun Suk; GOT7 Vs WINNER

JYP Entertainment's Park Jin Young and YG Entertainment's Yang Hyun Suk are going head-to-head.

Park JIn Young and Yang Hyun Suk are currently acting as judges on SBS audition program "K-Pop Star 3," where they exchange witty banter. They will both be releasing new boy groups that are expected to wage a fierce war to be the very best. Park Jin Young's GOT7 and Yang Hyun Suk's WINNER will go head-to-head on behalf of their respective company CEOs.

What's interesting is Park Jin Young and Yang Hyun Suk's similarities and differences. It's not their first time releasing new groups, and they've battled it out in the music industry not just with their agency singers, but on stage as well.

Do you remember Seo Taiji and the Boys' debut stage? They received a 7.8 score from judges. At the time, Seo Taiji and the Boys were noticed thanks to their distinctive stage attire, their twister dance, and their linked arms pose. At the time composer Ha Kwang Hoon commented, "The melody line seems like it's on drugs. It seems like no thought was put into the melody line." Songwriter Yang In Ja stated, "As a habit I usually listen to the lyrics first, and there are 2 criteria I look for. Are the lyrics written in standard form and do they make sense? Another thing I look for is whether the lyrics present a new story. I think it could have been better if there was a new content with a new appraoch." Seo Taiji and the Boys received a score of 7.8.

Ironically enough, Seo Taiji and the Boys received a poor rating, but recorded amazing album sales numbers and took the number 1 spot on various charts. They were chosen as the leading idols for teens at the time. Yang Hyun Suk was a member of the group, where he got his start in the music industry.

As the outcry of the older generation against the newly evolved pop music entered through Seo Taiji and the Boys, they were becoming themselves the cry of a generation longing for an outlet of creativity and freedom against the antiquated and conservative Korean traditions and culture. Seo Taiji crying out "That's Enough!" in the verse of the song "Classroom Idea" was the rebellion that the younger generation were seeking.

Yang Hyun Suk became the revolutionary dancer that helped form the Seo Taiji Boy's famous choreographs. When Seo Taiji decided to learn to dance, he sought out the then-famous Park Nam Jung's (dubbed Korea's Michael Jackson) backdancer Yang Hyun Suk. That alone adds to the notion that Yang Hyun Suk was in the upper echelon of dancers in Korea at the time.

As Yang Hyun Suk was establishing himself as one of the two or three best dancers in Korea, another person who would follow a similar path entered the music scene. It was Park Jin Young.

Park Jin Young originally debuted as the group "Park Jin Young and the New Generation" to no success. His solo album, "Blue City", was a different story. His song "Behind You" was featured on the OST of the wildly popular drama series "Feelings" while he took to the stage with "Don't Leave Me", a house-pop dance song. Both songs were extremely successful.

Park Jin Young was different from other singers. He didn't start at the bottom - he was from a wealthy family and went to a great school. He could have been a regular office employee at a successful company. He even said in an interview that the job he expected to get was a menial desk job. However, as he delved further into music, he became more and more popular and successful.

He was the first singer to break the "sexy" boundary in a generally conservative music market. In 1995, he published a song called "In the Elevator" with the lyrics "We were making love in the elevator without anyone to disturb us". It was not just a shock but a breakthrough.

The two CEO's have met previously as solo artists as well. Most people recognize Yang Hyun Suk as "Yang Goon", his nickname from when he was a member of Taiji Boys. However, after the sudden breakup of Taiji Boys in 1996, Yang Hyun Suk decided to release his own label and album. Two years later, in 1998, Yang Hyun Suk released "The Devil's Smoke", his first album. He participated in producing the album as well, writing the lyrics to eight songs.

Yang Hyun Suk's musical abilities extended far beyond dancing. He was a lyricist, producer, and someone who understood music much better than other people. This is the reason why he was able to produce Big Bang, 2NE1, Gummy, Wheesung, Jinusean, Se7en, Lee Hi, and other mega stars.

His solo album was very successful and helped quench the thirst of many Taiji Boys' fans. His only real challenger was Park Jin Young, who released perhaps his most famous album to date, "Even After Ten Years..." His title song from this album? One of Korea's most beloved song of all time - "HONEY".

They clashed as solo artists only once, but they have always been building each other up as producers, CEOs, and friends since they met in the early 90's.
