Scarlett Johansson Quits OxFam Over SodaStream Super Bowl Ads; Celebrity Charity Is Latest Casualty in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (Video)

Scarlett Johansson quit as Oxfam ambassador. Johansson has been the celebrity representative for Oxfam International for eight years. Scarlett ended her relationship with Oxfam after they criticized Johansson's support of SodaStream. Scarlett Johansson had endorsement deal with the Israeli company, SodaStream, which operates a factory in the West Bank settlement of Maale Adumim. Oxfam says the settlements are illegal and deny Palestinian rights.

Johansson calls the West Bank plant "a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine."Johansson and SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum point to  the employment of Palestinian workers at the Maale Adumim plant as proof that the plant is working to bring things together in the conflicted state. The Maale Adumim settlement is one of 130 Israeli settlements throughout the West Bank which were established to prevent the Palestinians from ever gaining  control over the West Bank.

Scarlett Johansson quit as Oxfam ambassador after Oxfam said her global role was "incompatible" with the SodaStream Super Bowl ad. Scarlett appears in a Soda Stream commercial which is due to air during the Super Bowl on Sunday. The Scarlett Johansson Soda Stream Ad has already been seen more than 4.5 million times on YouTube. Scarlett Johansson's Super Bowl ad for SodaStream has been getting more than its share of controversy. Fox rejected because the ad because it taunted Pepsi and Coca Cola, the big two soda companies. Fox will air a censored version of the Scarlett Johansson Super Bowl SodaStream ad because Pepsi is paying Fox for the halftime show.

Lahav Harkov wrote in The Jerusalem Post that Oxfam is wrong to separate itself from  Johannson. She said "In a display of utter stupidity, it seems to have caved to the BDS [Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions] movement, since Sodastream, for which Johansson is shilling in a Super Bowl ad, has a factory near Maale Adumim. Of course, Sodastream employs Palestinian workers in that factory with better salaries and benefits than they would get working for a PA [Palestinian Authority] company, but Oxfam clearly won't let facts get in the way of its preconceived anti-Israel notions."

Pro-Palestinian activists have blasted SodaStream, which makes home drinks carbonation machines, for maintaining a large factory in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank. The West Bank was captured by Israel in 1967 and the territory is claimed by the Palestinians. Scarlett Johansson told critics that she supports a two-state solution. Scarlett says she believes in conscious consumerism and transparency.

Scarlett Johansson has worked for Oxfam since 2005.

Oxfam put out a statement saying "Oxfam has accepted Scarlett Johansson's decision to step down after eight years as a global ambassador and we are grateful for her many contributions. While Oxfam respects the independence of our ambassadors, Ms Johansson's role promoting the company SodaStream is incompatible with her role as an Oxfam global ambassador. Oxfam believes that businesses such as SodaStream, that operate in settlements, further the ongoing poverty and denial of rights of the Palestinian communities that we work to support. Oxfam is opposed to all trade from Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law."
