Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters Weighs in on Scarlett Johansson Super Bowl SodaStream Ad

Pink Floyd's Roger Waters never backs away politically or musically. Scarlett Johansson has been taking a lot of heat for promoting Israeli firm SodaStream in its Super Bowl ad. Scarlett stepped down as the representative of OxFam over the controversy. The SodaStream ad itself was censored on Fox for an entirely different reason. No Johansson's SodaStream Super Bowl hit The Wall. Pink Floyd's Roger Waters took to Facebook and left readers uncomfortably numb.

Roger Waters took to Facebook to posted say Hey You in an open letter to Scarlett Johansson. Scarlett Johansson's ad for SodaStream opened a new battle with Pink Floyd's songwriter and bassist Roger Waters, SodaStream is an Israeli company that has a manufacturing plant in the West Bank, the hotseat of the Israeli-Palestine conflict. Israel's rock community is squaring off against Pink Floyd's Roger Waters.

SodaStream makes kitchen appliances that turn tap water into seltzer. The Scarlett Johansson Super Bowl ad for SodaStream drew calls from activists who want to boycott all products that are made in Israeli-occupied territories. In the Facebook post Waters also said that he had also asked Neil Young to join him in observing the boycott. Neil Young has a summer concert scheduled in Israel, which doesn't get top level stars.

Roger Waters challenged Scarlett Johansson's decision to endorse an Israeli company. Waters posted a series of questions about Israel's treatment of Palestinians. Israel's virtual rock community defended Johansson and hopes that other artists will not join Roger Waters' plea to boycott Israel. Elvis Costello and the Pixies canceled concerts over Israel's politics in recent years. Leonard Cohen and Jethro Tull have played Israel, but with proceeds going to organizations promoting coexistence and peace. Waters himself performed in Israel several years ago.

Commenters posted all over Roger Waters' Facebook page, some answered the questions, some told him to stick to music. Some advising the prog-psychedelic-rocker not to mix music and politics. But Roger Waters has always mixed the political into his music. Even on some of his most personal songs, there is at least a hint of social commentary if not outright political statements.
