Doctor Who Season 8 Director Compares Peter Capaldi And Matt Smith As John Hurt Talks Return After 50th Anniversary: Could Steven Moffat Write River Song Resurrection?

Now that "Doctor Who" season 8 is officially underway, a slew of news, quotes, and spoilers, about the BBC series have surfaced for Whovians to digest.

Recently, io9 interviewed "Doctor Who" season 8 director Ben Wheatley, who directed the first two episodes of the upcoming series.

"Doctor Who is pretty dark, I think. Generally it’s dark, it’s always been dark. Even in the more modern ones," said Wheatley. "To have a unity that runs eight years [of the new series]… it’s pretty crazy. They’ve done everything, they’ve tried all sorts of stuff. It seems to me the episodes that we’re doing now seem more like classic Who. We’re going back to that style. But you’ll have to wait and see.”

Wheatley also compared Peter Capaldi portrayal on "Doctor Who" to Matt Smith.

“With someone like Capaldi, he’s a massive Who fan. He knows Who inside out. And everything he does is very, carefully planned and thought about. I remember when they first started talking to me about doing it, and I was very nervous for just those reasons. How do you shape this performance?"

"But then when I heard who was going to do it — when they told me it was Capaldi, [I thought] that’s not really a problem. He’s so good. I was relieved, pretty much. It would have been a very different situation if it had been another kind of Matt Smith character. A guy who you don’t know. Molded from the start. But with Capaldi, you look at his career and you look at his performances they are all so brilliant, and all so different as well."

In addition, there was an interview with John Hurt recently where he was asked about possibly returning to "Doctor Who" after his appearance on the 50th Anniversary Special.

“I can’t think for a second… You’re asking me to answer something which I can’t answer,” said Hurt. “But I can’t think there’d be any reason to do that.”

And as talks of who will return to "Doctor Who" continues during season 8 production, fans are still theorizing on ways to bring River Song back into the fold.

Den of Geek contributor Rob Leane recently wrote several theories, one of which is that River Song could be resurrected by the Doctor.

"If the Master can return from certain death a multitude of times, and regeneration energy is now easy to come by, it’s not out of the question that the Doctor could bring River back. The Tasha Lem theory could work in this scenario too as River would have twelve new forms to get through," writes Leane.

Would you want John Hurt or River Song to return to "Doctor Who" season 8?
