Facebook News: Regulatory Filing Reveals Facebook Buying WhatsApp For $16 Billion, Zuckerberg Says Platform's Reach Is 'Incredibly Valuable'

Facebook News: Facebook is still the most popular social media website today, but as early it looks like the multi-billion company is already investing for the future.

In a recent report by several media outfits, Facebook is reportedly buying messaging platform WhatsApp for an astounding amount of $16 billion. In comparison, Viber was also acquired by Rakuten for 'only' $900 million days ago.

According to the report, Facebook is acknowledging what WhatsApp has done in connecting people through its messaging services. The social media giant says that more than 450 million people use the platform every month, where 70 percent of this number use it every day.

The impact of WhatsApp has been so large that its volume of global messages is already approaching the global SMS volume - a feat indeed.

In an interview about the deal, Marck Zuckerberg stresses the fact that what WhatsApp has done can already be considered a 'milestone'.

"WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable," he said.

Of course, the agreement should first be approved by regulatory departments in the US.
