Is Girls’ Generation In Danger?

Girls' Generation has not been doing as well as expected with their latest comeback.

Is Girls' Generation in trouble for the first time since their debut? They had a puzzling half comeback, and only stayed for a short while at the top of music charts. What could have happened to Korea's leading girl group?

Girls' Generation is one of Korea's top girl groups. Last year they were praised for "I Got a Boy," in Korea as well as in the global market. They then released their latest new song "Mr.Mr" on February 24th.

Although it's still too early to make conclusions, "Mr.Mr" has been met with a lackluster response compared to their previous songs. As expected, the song shot to the top of MelOn music charts as soon as it was released, but it was quickly taken over by SISTAR Soyou and Junggigo's collaboration song "Some." It's quite different from their previous records of taking all kills across major music charts. They also were overtaken by 2NE1's comeback on the 26th.

Girls' Generation's latest comeback had a lot of stuff going on with it. Before their comeback, it was announced that their music video data was damaged. They had to delay their comeback. Not only that, their song was pre-released via Japan's iTunes market. Five hours before their music release they announced their official comeback, all without a music video. When we consider that idols appeal to the public in both their music (songs) and visuals (music video, music programs), they had sort of a 'half comeback.' Surely it's difficult to satisfy fans with only one of those sources.

Although they weren't able to achieve as great of a score with their latest comeback, Girls' Generation is, after all, till Girls' Generation. They still were praised for "Mr.Mr," and when the postponed music video was finally released on the 28th, people were saying, "They're still ever Girls' Generation." The global response for this song was faster than ever before. Billboard commented that Girls' Generation is "arguably one of the biggest girl groups in the world, not just in K-pop."

Girls' Generation is standing at a crossroads. They went further than Japan and opened up North America pathways, and global standards are a top priority for the group. They needed music that could appeal to a wide variety of music fans worldwide, and delivered with "Mr.Mr." It was a choice Girls' Generation made with the future in mind. Currently the music video for "Mr.Mr" already has over 5.2 million views.

Now that Girls' Generation has released their song and music video, they have only to present their performance on music program stages. They've always come out with striking choreography and unprecedented stage concepts, and appealed to fans with their strong vocal skills. Will they be able to turn the tables? The fans are in great anticipation of Girls' Generation's music program comeback.
