Joe Namath Guarantees Derek Jeter Can Handle New York Sports Like `An Angel’; Broadway Joe Is Honorary Yankee

Joe Namath was a football legend, hitting the town before games, wearing a fur coat on the sidelines. Photographed with a drink in his hand, a model on each arm, Broadway Joe was the poster boy for sixties sports. Before the 1969 Super Bowl with the Baltimore Colts, Joe Namath guaranteed a New York Jets win.

Joe Namath visited the Yankees and said Derek Jeter 'an angel' for the way he's handled himself in New York.

Broadway Joe's lifestyle made as much headlines off the field as he did on the field, passing to Don Maynard. Derek Jeter has kept himself out of that kind of trouble. Why? Jeter guessed. "He had less newspapers back then. Less Internet. Stories go viral now."

Joe Namath was again in a New York sports uniform. This time he hit the field in Yankee  pinstripes with his familiar 12 on the back.

Sitting  behind the batting cage with Joe Girardi,  Joe was there to scout Derek Jeter.

Talking about Derek Jeter, Namath said "No, I can't relate to his career. Only if I had a head big enough. No, he's special. I accomplished goals and won championships. He's accomplished so much more."

Joe Namath said "Knowing the scrutiny that he's had over the years, I can't imagine how the guy could be an angel like this. He is to be respected for every phase of his life. Many of us fell short with some of that, but we learned to bounce back.

Joe Namath was the Yankees honorary "co-manager," and threw out the first pitch.

"It is human to err ... and I know about that. We do our best to come back. Derek hasn't made many errors that I've been able to witness."
