K-Pop's Duet-Dominated Music Market

Even though Girls' Generation and 2NE1 are living up to their names with their strong comebacks and extensive support from their respective fanbases, there is a 'wall' in the current music market that they have not been able to climb past.

This 'wall' is SISTAR member Soyu and Junggigo's single "Some."

"Some," which was released on February 7, has since made achieved an 'all-kill' on all online charts and in addition won first place on various music shows, fiercely driving past its competitors.

The duet, for example, has won three weeks in a row on KBS2's  Music Bank.

Following Soyu and Junggigo, other duets, such as Girl's Day's Sojin and Crucial Star or Kim Lim and Dynamic Duo's Choiza, have recently entered the music market.

The combination of 'girl group member + male hip-hop musician' is a trending pattern in the current K-Pop music scene as evidence of its success has been outlined in Soyu and Junggigo.

Sojin and hip-hop romanticist Crucial Star released "Three Things I Want to Give You" on the March 10. In addition, Kim Ye Rim and Choiza's single "Last Scene" is to be released on March 13.

Joining the list of collaborations is IU. On April 3, she will be featuring in rookie boy group HIGH4's single "Spring, Love, But No Cherry Blossom."

Having spent her trainee days together with the members of the boy group, she has promised to help them out on their early stages into the music industry.

In addition, Girl's Generation's Taeyeon and SHINee's Jonghyun had released their single 'Breath' as part of SM Entertainment's Ballad project.

Soyu and Junggigo's label, Starship Entertainment, expressed, "Because we thought it'd be a 'win-win' situation for both Soyu and Junggigo as well as the group SISTAR we started the duet project. The results have been beyond our imagination." Soyu, who's singing skills had been shadowed by Hyorin's popularity, gained tremendous attention for the success of the single.

One music critic added, "It is definitely a 'win-win' situation for both the girl group member and the hip-hop musician. In the case of the girl group member, adding a rap section further enhances the single. It is the same for the hip-hop musician; he can add a new flavor to the song and further elevate its popularity."
