Why China Fell in Love With Kim Tan and Do Min Joon

"My Love from the Star" has led China in a K-Drama heat.

Since the explosive popularity of the drama "My Love from the Star", China's efforts to analyze Korea's trendy dramas have increased. Local newspapers have labeled Korea's trendy dramas like "My Love from the Star" and "Heirs" that have gained popularity in China "Shin Pa Han Ji", meaning new category of Korean dramas. Chinese internet users, the media, and experts claim Korean dramas to be a consumer-centered fantasy showing the love of beautiful people. How do Chinese net users respond to Korean dramas?

"Yoochun oppa's new drama 'Three Days' has started. Let's chat while watching episode 4!" Comments filled the post on the Korean drama community "Han Jwi Ba" thread in China's largest web portal Baidu. "Han Jwi Ba", with 660,000 members, has more than 15 million posts. Because Chinese fans are able to watch uploaded Korean dramas right after it is aired in Korea, live updates on Korean dramas are posted.

Korean drama fans, or "Han Jwi Mi"s, watch Korean dramas fervently and religiously. Baidu has many Korean drama communities, including local TV station dramas "My Love from the Star" and "Three Days", and cable TV dramas such as tvN's "Emergency Couple" and "I Need Romance 3". Members classify Korean dramas according to days of broadcast, record viewer ratings, analyze popular trends, and review completed dramas like "I Can Hear Your Voice" and "Nine".

Korean dramas for "Han Jwi Mi"s are "beautiful romance for beautiful people"; the love story of two good-looking people are drawn with detail and emotion. Baidu's member "Moshanghwakai" stated: "The main characters are all beautiful. Because the screenwriter is female, their love story is illustrated in such fine detail". Member "5018A" commented, "Although the content is a bit unrealistic, it is something that everyone desires".

Korean dramas appeal to the Chinese as an "intimate fantasy"; on top of the shared basis of common Confucian values, Korea's consumer culture piques curiosity of the Chinese. Professor Zhang of Beijing University claimed that Korean dramas are the collaboration of culture and industry: "The industry market its products in Korean dramas; Korea's fashion, entertainment, and products also gain popularity with the success of Korean dramas".

Chinese net users ask why their country is unable to produce such trendy dramas. Compared to China's grand-scale historical and martial arts dramas, development in trendy dramas have been stagnant. China's newspaper analyzed that China's attempts to remake Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese dramas have been unsuccessful and claimed unoriginal.
