How Will Dating Effect The Longevity Of Girls' Generation As A Group?

Girls' Generation (SNSD) have proven to be trendsetters in 2014 by announcing the relationships of their members. The most recent announcement involves member Tiffany who has been dating 2PM Nichkhun. SM Entertainment confirmed the relationship on April 4 citing that Nichkhun and Tiffany share numerous commonalities including the fact that both idols have lived in the United States.  As noted in the breaking news story, this is the first idol relationship to be announced since BEAST's Yong Jun Hyung and KARA's Goo Hara.  Yong Junghyung and Goo Hara remained together for two years.

Revealing the relationship between Tiffany and JYP Entertainment's Nichkhun is a slightly risky move, as 2PM prepares for their comeback. While audiences have appeared to be receptive of Girls' Generation YoonA dating Lee Seung Gi, fans were not as quick to embrace the fact that Sooyoung was dating actor Jung Kyung Ho. Lee Seung Gi has a loyal fan base for both his music and acting, aiding in his ability to maintain a spot as a CF king. However, the fact that he is a solo artist excludes him from the allure and restrictions that are generally placed upon members of idol groups.

In the case of male groups, it is best to appear Sexy, Free, and Single as triumphed by the Super Junior hit. For male idols, scripted reality shows like We Got Married present the illusion of an actual relationship, even when one is not present. One of the overwhelming reactions by netizens to news regarding Nichkhun and Tiffany was that this is the end of Khuntoria. Khuntoria refers to Nichkhun's TV marriage with f(x) Victoria on season two of We Got Married, which continues to remain a fan favorite.

Girls' Generation debuted in 2007 and has maintained a clean cut image throughout their career. Earlier this year, many fans speculated if the dating announcements were the start of the end of Girls' Generation or the sign of a new era. By announcing their relationships, the group has taken a departure from the ad hoc practice in K-Pop which encourages hiding dating from the public.

During the recent comeback promotions for Mr.Mr, YoonA and Sooyoung answered questions regarding their boyfriends. This starkly contrasted with the members of 2NE1, who were faced to repeatedly answer why they are not currently dating. In terms of 2NE1, it is not surprising that the group has not announced their relationships, considering that the YG himself was in a secret relationship for nine years.

Is it more helpful for idols to be in a relationship? Does the news that two idols are dating discourage fans from supporting their careers?
