EXO’s Comeback - An Introduction To Their Growth

Mainstream group EXO has come back more intense than ever. Their performance is more lively, and they've shed their boy image for a more powerful masculine image. It just proves as evidence that EXO has grown once again.

On April 15th EXO held their 'EXO Comeback Show' at the Jamsil Gymnasium in Seoul. At the comeback show they unveiled their first performance of their 2nd mini album's "Overdose". It was powerful, and showcased choreography that was even more advanced than that of "Growl."

At this comeback show, EXO not only unveiled their performance for "Overdose" for the first time, but they also showed the music video. "Overdose" is a hip hop and R&B based dance song with an urban feel. It was produced by world renowned producing team The Underdogs, who previously worked with top pop stars such as Beyonce, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake, and others. Famous composer Kenzie also took part in creating this song. The song tells the sweet story of a man who's fallen head over heels in love, as if addicted to the 'drug' of love. It metaphorically expresses the fans' love towards EXO in a realistic and sensible way.

The most interesting point of the "Overdose" music video is that the entirety of the video was shot in one take. It is filled with a sense of mysticism. EXO-K and EXO-M members take turns putting on a lively performance throughout the video. EXO boasted their 12 member sharp and advanced choreography, and their force was felt in their increased intensity. Using the one-take technique, they heightened the group's charisma through its connectivity and the dreamy expressions in the close-up shots of the members' faces.

Baekhyun commented, "While we were preparing for the music video, there's a scene where D.O lies on the floor and the members have to get into formation, and it was quite difficult to put it all together. I made a lot of mistakes." Chanyeol said, "The camera work for this new song is the interesting one-take technique. When EXO-K is dancing, EXO-M members cannot be in the camera angle. It was really fun hiding behind the camera and running around."

Even during their "Overdose" performance EXO showed off their matured state. In "Growl" the members wore school uniforms and captured the image in between boys and men. In "Overdose", they took on the appearance of fully grown men. From the start they formed a diamond and showed quite advanced choreography. There were also moves that involved the members stepping on top of each other. They formed a line and made circles, continually changing their formations and showing uniformity even throughout the transitions in between. They gave off a much more complex yet carefree feeling. One thing that's sure is that they've completely shed the boy image for a powerful one.

After they finished performing, EXO said, "It was refreshing to have our first showcase in 2 years. We were really happy. Please continue to show us much love in our upcoming activities, and we'll show you an improved image. In 2014 we will give you happiness. Thank you all for coming. We'll work harder. Although we'll be doing our activities in two divided groups, there are many special performance, so don't be too disappointed. We'll work hard even in China."

EXO will hold their comeback stages on music programs as well, starting with KBS 2TV's "Music Bank" on the 18th, and moving on to MBC's "Show! Music Core" and SBS' "Inkigayo."
