South Korea Subway Crash Injures 200 Weeks After South Korea Ferry Disaster; No Fatalities, Dozens Rushed to the Hospital

South Korea Subway Crash: A subway crash in South Korea injured about 200 people today.

At least 170 people were injured after two subway trains collided in Seoul, South Korea. The crash happened at the Sangwangsimni Station on Subway Line 2 at around 3:30 p.m. According to officials one train ran against another that was parked due to mechanical failures. The subway train incident happened in the South Korea capital, Seoul. About 4.5 million passengers use Seoul's modern metro system every day.

Wounded passengers from South Korea subway incident were taken to 10 nearby hospitals. No fatalities have been reported.

This is the second serious transport accident that  South Korea has suffered in just over two weeks. South Korea is still mourning the victims of a ferry accident on April 16. in the country's worst disaster in 20 years, 300 people were killed or are missing in the submerged hull of a capsized ship.

The last major accident on a South Korean subway system was in 2003 when 192 were killed in a subway fire in the city of Daegu, which prompted major safety improvements.

During a press briefing Seoul Metro official Jeong Su-young said the driver of the moving train told officials that he applied the emergency brake after noticing a stop signal but wasn't able to halt in time.

Fire department official Kim Kyung-su told a news conference "An incoming train crashed into one that was stopped at the station," fire department official Kim Kyung-su told a news conference.

Several area hospitals reported that none of the victims were seriously hurt. Hanyang University Medical Center said it treated 36 subway passengers for minor external injuries.

Lee Dong-hyun, a passenger on the incoming train, told the media that the train "stopped suddenly ... and everyone screamed" and said the door leading to the next car was crushed and couldn't be opened.

Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon was at the scene of the crash.

The metro is operated by the city of Seoul.
