Tribeca Film Festival 2014: ‘Palo Alto’ Continues Coppola Family’s Legacy In Movies; Film Inspired By James Franco’s Short Stories

Tribeca Film Festival 2014: The new indie drama “Palo Alto” brings together two famous Hollywood families and a Hollywood star who seems to be everywhere and in everything, reports NY 1.

The new film, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival, continues the legacy of the Coppola family in movies and filmmaking. “Palo Alto” is the feature directorial debut of Gia Coppola, granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola, niece of Sofia Coppola and cousin of Nicolas Cage.

According to NY 1, Coppola adapted the film from a short-story collection written by the versatile James Franco.

"When I met James, he kind of really wanted to make 'Palo Alto' into a movie, and I had showed him some of my photographs, and we wanted to collaborate in some form or another," Coppola said, speaking with NY 1.

"But when I read his book, I fell in love with it. It just really depicted teenagers in a realistic way that I hadn't seen in a long time, and so I was really excited to have that opportunity. And I was sort of reflecting back on my youth, and I had enough separation to look at it nostalgically."

"I just kind of gave her as much space and freedom as possible to make the kind of movie she wanted to make," Franco said. "I hired her because I really liked her artistic taste, and so I just wanted her to have the space to really bring that to the project."

“Palo Alto,” starring Emma Roberts, is a gritty, realistic and dark portrayal of the lives of teenagers. Emma is the daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts. She says she was drawn to the project because her character in the film was so out of her character.

“My role is April, and she’s very much the more reserved one in the movie,” Robert said. She continues that there’s a lot of craziness going on in the film but her character is more introverted than anybody and is a complete opposite of her real-life persona. She describes herself as “talkative” and “outgoing,” but continues that it “was fun to get to do something completely different.”

“Palo Alto” is now in theatres.
