St. Louis manager Mike Matheny spoke on Monday of the deep-seated respect that exists between the two franchises.

"You hope it's reciprocated," Matheny said. "Just for what the organizations have been able to do. ... That consistency that comes with success, one, and two, the way you go about it. They've done a real nice job of being successful, yes, but also just holding that logo and holding that expectation of being a Yankee and how you go about playing the game every day. I think players, what we hope they do, is not get too caught up in anything except to go play the game."

Phelps (1-1, 3.18 ERA)pitched on the wrong side of a masterful Chris Sale outing his last time out, tagged with a loss after seven innings of two-run ball. He scattered six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts in a 104-pitch outing, his best of the year so far, according to MLB.com.

The 27-year-old Phelps grew up 15 minutes from downtown St. Louis, in Florissant, Mo., and rooted for the Cardinals as a kid. On Tuesday he'll be tasked with shutting them down.

"You grow up thinking about playing on this field," Phelps said. "Obviously, you don't think about doing it in a Yankees uniform, but it's really cool. You walk out and you see the Arch. There's small things like that that do make it fun."

Lancy Lynn (5-2, 3.58 ERA) will be going for his sixth win this season as he has the task of shutting down a hot Yankees team. Lynn has quality starts in three of four May starts.
