‘Jupiter Ascending’ Release Date Pushed Back: Will Mila Kunis Film Benefit From Delay Like ‘Gravity’ And ‘300: Rise Of An Empire’?

The release date for "Jupiter Ascending," starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum, was pushed back seven months by Warner Bros. Many know that a delay in a movie's release date can lead to box office suicide but don't discount the film just yet. Will "Jupiter Ascending" benefit from the delayed release date like films "Gravity" and "300: Rise of an Empire?"

According to Variety, "delaying a movie's release is no easy decision, since it adds millions of dollars in interest and other completion costs to the budget and creates negative buzz that is hard to shake. But it can be even more costly and potentially deadly to roll out such a pricey pic, already laden with a production budget of $175 million, before it's ready."

Warner Bros. decision to push back the release date of "Jupiter Ascending" from July 18 to February 2015 was "prompted by weak response to a research screening in late April and the fact that the visual effects, on which the futuristic thriller heavily relies, were incomplete," the publication reports.

Though a delayed release date usually hints at a weak film, all hope is not lost for Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum's sci-fi movie.

"We have seen Warners delay a release for excellent marketing reasons, of which 'Gravity' is the ultimate example," said William Sargent, co-founder and CEO of Framestore, one of the major vfx vendors on the film.

Warners also moved back the 2014 fantasy movie "300: Rise of an Empire" when its effects weren't finished, and these two films took off in the box office. "300: Rise of an Empire" made $330m worldwide (triple its $110m budget), Forbes reports.

According to Forbes, Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" moved its October 2009 release date into a mid-February slot and the Leonardo DiCaprio thriller opened with $40 million and earned $294m worldwide on an $80m budget. Paramount also delayed "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" from June 2012 to March 2013, and the action sequel earned $375m worldwide on a $130m budget. Sony moved "The Monuments Men" from late December, 2013 to February 7th, 2014 and made $154 million worldwide.

No one can say for sure that "Jupiter Ascending" will get the same kind of attention at this point, but Mila and Channing still have a chance at a box office hit.
