For everyone who's world fell apart with "Miticlorians" or was severely confused how robots and slaves exist simultaneously, we can all breath a sigh of relief. Star Wars will be good again! It was announced today that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars 8, and write Star Wars 9.

Initial reports were a bit confused, with reports that Rian Johnson would be writing and directing both films. Sources have since confirmed that he will be writing and directing Star Wars 8, and writing the treatment for 9.

Johnson's first film "Brick" was a breakout indie success, made with only 50,000 dollars. His second film," The Brothers Bloom" was a fun heist film starring Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody. Most recently he made Looper, a $30 million sci-fi, time travel film. Johnson has also done some of the best episode of Breaking Bad ever.

According to Slashfilm.com ," Hiring Johnson says 'We want a filmmaker who can bring real gravitas to the series. A filmmaker whose work has been anything but conventional." He'll have to make something somewhat conventional with Episode VIII, of course, but with several years to work on a screenplay you can bet Johnson will infuse it with the passion and talent he's shown in spades with his first few films."

For fans of the series, especially fans who saw the prequels as bland, self indulgent, and poorly written, this is a huge turn around for the franchise. Johnson is an innovative film maker, and by no means a safe or predictable choice. Choosing Johnson is a statement that "Star Wars" will once again push the envelope.

Disney plans to release a new "Star Wars" movie every year starting in December of 2015. "Episode VII" will be the first movie released, and then the studio will alternate between spin-offs and new episodes of the main narrative.
