Wicked The Musical Movie Adaptation Gearing Up! ‘Let It Go’ Singer Idina Menzel For Lead Role; ‘Spring Awakening’ Also On Its Way To Silver Screen

Two of the most famous Broadway musicals are on its way to the big screen! Both "Wicked" and "Spring Awakening," which won a number of Tony's in the 2000s, are actually moving forward after years of waiting.

According to showbizspy.com, "Frozen" star Idina Menzel - who played Elphaba and won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical - has been tapped to reprise her role in the movie adaptation of Wicked The Musical.

On the other hand, "Glee" star Lea Michele - who actually worked with Idina Menzel in "Glee" as mother and daughter - is reportedly trying to get the lead role for the movie adaptation. However, Menzel is the allegedly the obvious choice for the producer following the success of Disney movie Frozen.

"Lea thought she'd be a shoo-in for Wicked, but now Idina may get it because she's hot after singing Frozen's hit song."

Meanwhile, Vulture was able to talk to "Wicked" composer Stephen Schwartz during the opening night of Idina Menzel's new musical, "If/Then," where he revealed that the "Wizard of Oz" origin story has already "started gearing up" for the big screen. Although, he admitted that there are still no concrete plans for the Wicked movie adaptation. However, after years of false starts, it seems that this year could possible the year for "Wicked" in the big screen.

"We're starting to do some work on it," Schwartz revealed. "We've actually started gearing up on it a little bit."

"I don't know exactly how many years away it is," Schwartz said, but he did say that he's very optimistic about the movie adaptation and that his creative team are already thinking about what to consider in order to do so.

"What are we going to change?" Schwartz said. "What are we going to keep? How do you use a whole new language and medium to tell the story? [We can] really look at it again and say, 'Oh, we can do this, and we've always wanted to do that and we couldn't onstage, but we can in a movie.' We're actually having a blast."

On the hand, "Spring Awakening," which originally starred by Jonathan Groff and Glee's Lea Michele is on a rather faster track than "Wicked." The multi-talented composer Duncan Sheik admitted to The San Diego Union-Tribune that he and partner lyricist Steven Sater are planning to start with the movie production this year.

McG (Charlie's Angels) is tapped to direct the movie adaptation while Tom Hanks' production company, Playtone is set to produce.

Sheik also revealed that lyricist Steven Sater already wrote a new song for the movie adaptation.

Sheik said he and lyricist Steven Sater wrote a new song for the movie. "The real truth always is that it's the only way you're eligible for an Academy Award, is to have a new song," he said. "[So] we've written the song. I can't wait to do it -- I hope I get to do it, to record it."
