'Mad Max' Remake 'Fury Road' Starring Tom Hardy And Charlize Theron Releases First Images: See Them Here [PHOTO]

"Mad Max" is back, welcome to the thunderdome! The "Mad Max" remake "Fury Road" starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy released its first images today. Unlike a lot of reboots and remakes, this will actually feature the origonal talent behind the project.

George Miller changed the post-apocolyptic genre permenatly, with 1979's "Mad Max," which also launched Mel Gibson's career. Two sequels and three and a half decades later the 69-year-old Miller returns to the project that made his career as well, with a new cast and a story.

In "Fury Road,"Tom Hardy takes over for Gibson as road warrior Max Rockatansky, while a Charlize Theron plays a bad-ass commander with a shaved head named Imperator Furiosa. The stars spent a seven months in the desert of Namibia to shoot the film. "It was mental in a brilliant way," says Hardy. "You have no concrete, no coffee shops. We were in the middle of a sandpit."

The rugged production suited Miller and his singular vision to reboot the Mad Max franchise. "I wanted to tell a linear story-a chase that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes," says the Australian writer-director. "Fury Road" features few digital effects and even less dialogue, he explains. "In this crucible of very intense action, the characters are revealed."

The official synopsis reads, "'MAD MAX: FURY ROAD' is the fourth film of George Miller's Road Warrior/Mad Max franchise co-written and directed by Miller. The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.

Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order... There's Max (played by TOM HARDY from The Dark Knight Rises), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos.

And... Furiosa (played by CHARLIZE THERON from Prometheus), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland."

Entertainment Weekly, did an exclusive on the project, which includes photos from the film, which you can see here.
