'Pacific Rim 2' Release Date Announced, Also To Be 'Pacific Rim' Animated Series, Guillermo Del Toro Makes Video Addressing Fans, Watch Here [VIDEO]

There will be yet another movie about giant fighting robots. Universal has announced that "Pacific Rim 2" will be released on Friday, April 7, 2017.

Guillermo del Toro will be working with Legendary Pictures to make the sequel to the 2014 film. He will be joined by  Zak Penn, of "The Incredible Hulk," and "X-Men: The Last Stand" to write the script for the sequel.

Legendary pictures Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will return to help produce with Guillermo del Toro, while Mary Parent, Callum Greene, and Jillian Share will executive produce.

Del Toro's original 2013 film "Pacific Rim" starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba from "Thor" and "Luther, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day from "Its Always Sunny In Philidelphia." The movie was set in a futuristic world where giant monsters called Kaiju have come from a portal to another dimension in the ocean floor, and are starting to overrun the Earth. In order to fight the threat, humans built giant robots so large that a single brain can't control them, so they are controlled by two pilots that do some kind of mind meld. The problem is that at the end of the movie they closed the inter-dimensional portal at the end of the first movie(or was it just a time space vortex within our dimension?) Regardless, it will be interesting to see how he Guillermo del Toro writes his way out of that.

The first film, distributed by Warner Bros., earned $411 million worldwide. Universal will distribute the sequel. Legendary ended its pact with Warner Bros. in late 2013 and signed a five-year production and co-financing partnership with Universal that began early in 2014.

In a video message addressing fans directly, Del Toro also said there would be a "Pacific Rim" animated series. Watch the video here.
