The long-gestating Jimi Hendrix biopic has just announced its lead role. "Jimi: All is By My Side" will be starring  Outkast's Andre 3000, also known as Andre Benjamin.

The film "Jimi: All is By My Side" finally got made, and we now have a pretty promising trailer. Comments on the trailer were generally enthusiastic. One commentator said, "JIMI: ALL IS BY MY SIDE Official Trailer. I got chills from a movie trailer. That never happens." But some die-hard fans weren't impressed, one said, "It's a sad industry when a movie with an actor playing Jimi is considered more commercially viable than a documentary with actual footage of the man himself. In the 70's, the "Jimi Hendrix" rockumentary film was released in theatres. Why not do the same today with the 2013 documentary "Hear My Train A Comin'"?"

Written and directed by "12 Years a Slave" screenwriter John Ridley, the film chronicles Hendrix's pre-fame years.

While Benjamin previously displayed plenty of acting talent in John Singleton's "Four Brothers" and Guy Ritchie's "Revolver," many critics wonder if Andre 3000 had the acting chops to be the central actor in a biopic about such a revered icon.

"Jimi" already caught the eye of critics who had the chance to see it at various film festivals, and they're mostly positive about it.

Andre 3000 said "For me, it's colours. I want people to feel the same way I see it."

The film starts out in 1966, just 4 years before Jimi's untimely death. Jimi is wrapped up in his music career as it is about to take off.

André's Jimi is passionate about his music and the power of love. "When the power of love takes over the love of power, that's when things will change," Jimi says in the trailer. 

But ultimately, it was all about the music for Jimi. "I want people to feel the music the same way I see it," Jimi says.

Hayley Atwell, Burn Gorman, Imogen Poots and Ruth Negga all co-star, with Ashley Charles playing Rolling Stones star Keith Richards.

The movie has a US release date of September 26.
