Taylor Swift has taken on a whole new look and sound in her newly released music video for the, ‘Shake It Off,’ and not everyone’s happy about it. The singer abandoned her typical Country style singing for the new song, instead adopting a more traditional dance-pop sound.  In the video, she appears wearing a variety of hip hop inspired ensembles, often surrounded by twerking African American backup dancers, which has drawn the ire of many, who  accuse her of cultural appropriation, and even flat out racism. Rapper Earl Sweatshirt of Odd Future even took to social media to voice his disapproval.

In one pivotal moment in the video, Swift is seen wearing large hoop earrings, chunky gold necklaces and a track jacket, as she crawls through a tunnel of twerking butts. To many, this moment is offensive for a host of reasons, from the objectification of black women, to the co-optation of hip hop by a white artist, who has no authentic connection to the genre. Sweatshirt, for his part, criticized the video through a series of tweets, including one in he stated that he hasn’t “watched the Taylor Swift video, and I don’t need to watch it to tell you that it’s inherently offensive and ultimately harmful.” Others have taken issue with her timing in releasing the video: she aired it over a live stream at the same time that President Obama was hosting his own live stream discussing the police conflict with protesters in Ferguson, Missouri.

Swift is not the first white artist to be accused of cultural appropriation after releasing a hip hop inspired song or music video. Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea and Katy Perry have all received similar criticism in recent months. Perhaps Swift’s attempted foray into the genre is the most surprising, though, because it is such a departure from the style she is known for.
