When did this happen? Grigor Dimitrov now is definitely better than his girlfriend Maria Sharapova. When he advanced further than his girlfriend did in this past Wimbledon, most critics thought it was Maria Sharapova coming off of the high of winning Roland Garros, but with the Bulgarian going onto the 4th round of US Open 2014, it looks like the tables have turned. Despite her competitive streak, can Maria Sharapova happy for her boyfriend?

Grigor Dimitrov, the eternally confident optimist, beat David Goffin in a thrilling four setter, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1. The 23-year-old Bulgarian turned the game around after the embarrassing first set.

“[David Goffin] had all the answers,” Grigor said after the match. It looked like Grigor himself had a few answers as well!

However, earlier that day, his girlfriend Maria Sharapova lost to Caroline Wozniacki in three sets, 4-6, 6-2 and 2-6. This was a shocker to the 27-year-old Russian player, who won Roland Garros this year.

“It means so much to me,” Caroline Wozniacki said courtside. “It’s been a bit up and down this year for me, so this hardcourt season has been great. To win today against a great champion is a great feeling.”

The 25-year-old Danish player, who broke up with Rory McIlroy early this summer, showed the world in US Open 2014 that it wasn’t just her ex-fiancé who was excelling in sports.

Now the real question is, will Maria Sharapova show up to Grigor Dimitrov’s 4th round match against Gael Monfils? Or will she be too proud to admit to the fact her boyfriend five years her junior is now playing much better tennis?

US Open 2014 has been full of upsets so Maria shouldn’t feel too bad that she was ousted in the 3rd round. American favorite Venus Williams, world number two Simona Halep and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova have all been vanquished by younger and better players this year.

But to the Danish player’s credit, Caroline Wozniacki played phenomenal tennis. The better player always wins.
