'Nurse Jackie' Cancelled; Showtime Dark Comedy To End After Seventh Season

"Nurse Jackie" show is over. The Showtime dark comedy will finish its rounds after the seventh season.

The "Nurse Jackie" show's end of the Edie Falco starrer was announced by Showtime on September 10 via Twitter, saying: "Nurse Jackie is working one last shift! Join us in celebrating and bidding farewell to the 7th and FINAL season in 2015."

The tweet was accompanied by a photo showing the series' main cast, three of which holding cards that say "THE FINAL SEASON."

According to Sea Coast Online, Showtime president David Nevins has nothing but good words to describe the show's star. "Edie is one of our finest actresses. We are so honored to have had her work on the network. She creates indelible characters and Nurse Jackie Peyton is no exception," said Nevins.

He also shared what the audience can expect from the "Nurse Jackie's" final season. "I know this final season will bring her [Jackie Peyton] story to a close that will satisfy the ever-growing number of loyal viewers who have been entranced and, at times, appalled by Jackie through the years," added Nevins.

Lionsgate Television chairman Kevin Beggs also released a statement regarding the "Nurse Jackie" show's end. "It is with great sadness and pride that we and Showtime bid farewell to such an outstanding series like 'Nurse Jackie,' its stellar cast led by the incomparable Edie Falco, brilliant producing team led by Clyde Phillips and Richie Jackson, and the entire family of craftspeople and artists that bring this show to rapt audiences year after year," said Beggs. "We consider ourselves lucky to have been part of the [story] and look forward to an unforgettable final season."

"Nurse Jackie" first went on air in 2009 and has won several Emmy Awards and Prism Awards. Its seventh and final season has reportedly begun production and will be shown in 2015.
