Pharrell Williams Is Happy To Recycle Fashion; Pharrell Williams Debuts G-Star RAW At New York Fashion Week

Pharrell Williams, who wrote the summer smash "Happy," wants to help save the planet. Pharrell is making a fashion statement in denim that he is making from recycled ocean plastics. Pharrell's Bionic Yarn textile company produces a fiber made from discarded plastic retrieved from the sea.

On Friday, Pharrell was joined by a dozen models during New York Fashion Week to premiere his RAW for the Oceans spring-summer collection. G-Star's RAW for the Oceans was created in partnership with Bionic Yarn, the Vortex Project, Parley for the Oceans and curated by Pharrell Williams, the collection is made from ground-breaking Bionic Yarn - an eco-thread of fibers derived from recycled plastic bottles.

Pharrell Williams says he wants to help keep plastic out of the ocean in Australia and around the world.

"It's not just Australia, the whole entire planet needs a checkup," he said. "The world is 75-85 per cent water and so are humans, we are 75-85 per cent water. There is a huge parallel there. The significance of water on a planet shows that life exists."

"It's for two reasons: one because the planet does need help," Pharrell said. "Y'know, our planet is sick. We people are the bloodline and there are some blockages with all the crazy things going on in the world. The second reason is that so many amazing things have happened to me. I've had some really generous and blessed harvesting. The least I can do is get to our global community and give back to the earth.''

"It's very easy to forget we live on this planet," Pharrell told the crowd at 23 Wall Street. "We don't want to just talk about it, but we actually wanted to put it in practice."

Pharrell's new line includes the first ever denims woven from Bionic Yarn.

The RAW for the Oceans collection is the forefront of sustainable fashion. Environmental organizations Sea Shepard Conservation Society USA and Plastic Pollution Coalition, amongst others, highlighted the seriousness of plastic in our oceans.  An issue of ocean plastic grows - each year alone, three times as much rubbish is dumped into the ocean as the weight of fish caught - so does the need for a solution. G-Star has joined forces with its partners, using ground-breaking technology to not only retrieve plastic from the oceans, but transform it into a new generation of denim.

This first collection of the RAW for the Oceans initiative has already innovated over 10 tons of the problematic ocean plastic. Containing men's and women's pieces to support the cause while becoming a part of the solution - style is uncompromised. Matching their internal innovation, the Bionic Yarn denims are printed with an original pattern. Using the initiative's mascot, Otto the Octopus, the pattern morphs his organic form into classic prints like houndstooth. An element of discovery is brought to the garments through the prints, especially with their internal application, only revealed with the subtle cuff of a pant.
