A Look Into How Japan Agency 'Johnny's Entertainment' Sets Rules For Their Fandoms

With many idol groups these days, mainstream music cannot be without them anymore.

With idol groups comes idol fantoms, which have grown over the course of these years. Fandoms support and sometimes control idol groups. However in 2014, there have been many upsetting turn of events for fantoms such as dating rumors to group break up rumors.

Lets take a look at how Japan agency, Johnny's Entertainment, controls their fandoms.

Johnny's was created in 1975 and can be compared to the SM Entertainment of Japan. SM has also been compared many times to Johnny's as well.

Johnny's started with both female and male groups but currently only houses male artists. Johnny's houses many popular artists including SMAP, Kinkikids, V6, Arashi, NEWS, KAT-TUN and more.

Johnny's is one of the top agencies in Japan, so much so that many people say that the entertainment industry would not be here if it weren't for Johnny's.

Being an agency that has been around for almost 40 years, their rules and policies are very strict and firm.

First, Johnny's Entertainment artists are banned from using SNS. Idol groups are not allowed to use their name to create an SNS account. There have been several artists who have used fake names to create accounts, but once caught, the consequences were severe.

Instead, Johnny's artists are able to interact with fans through 'Johnny's Web'. This site allows fans to pay a certain amount in order to see the idol members posts online. This site does not allow the artists to talk back and forth with their fans, but this does block them from having any word mistakes and having rumors started.

Another policy of Johnny's is that fans are not allowed to send presents to their favorite artists. Although it seems harmless in sending a present on a special day to your favorite group, the amount in which fans have been spending to send gifts has gone to far these days.

At Johnny's, the artists are allowed to receive fan letters only from their fans. All other presents are prohibited. This policy was put in place after an incident that took place in 1989. A popular group then received a 4 ton truck filled with chocolate on Valentine's Day. This proved to be way too overboard and had no option to remove the chocolate. News of this caused a hot issue and since then Johnny's has prohibited receiving gifts from fans.

Also, Johnny's prohibits artists from doing other work on the side. Former KAT-TUN member opened his own business regardless of this policy and was later withdrawn from the group despite numerous warnings. Many might think that they should be allowed to have another job or business on the side in case they don't make it big or have any promotions. However, Johnny's provides paychecks to their artists despite having promotions/work or not.

These rules have its pros and cons, but this system seems to be working for Johnny's and has allowed their relationship between their artists and fans to be content.
