Michael Sam seems ready to set another milestones as NFL's first openly gay player get engaged to his longterm boyfriend Vito Cammisano while in Rome, sometime around the co-defensive player of the year's 25th birthday. 

25-year-old American football defensive end, Michael Sam has been dating his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, fellow alum of the University of Missouri, for several months. Vito Cammisano had been a member of the school's swim team.

Michael Sam Announces He Is Gay

Earlier this year, Sam became the first openly gay man to be drafted into the NFL after the St. Louis Rams picked him in the seventh round. Sam was released after the pre-season; however, he was later picked up by the Dallas Cowboys. In October, he was cut from the team and currently is a free agent.

Former Hitchcock OL/DE Michael Sam was the first NFL draft prospect to announce to the world he is gay. He made the announcement to ESPN Outside the Lines reporter Chris Connelly.

"I understand how big this is," Sam told Connelly. "It's a big deal. No one has done this before. And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be ... I want to be a football player in the NFL."

Michael Sam Engaged To Boyfriend Vito Cammisano

The NFL's first open gay player is engaged to his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, reports Page Six.

Michael Sam and Vito Cammisano were engaged while in Rome, during their recent Europe vacation. The two have been together for quite some time now; their vacation included trips to Italy and Span, according to a report by People Magazine. The couple, who went to the University of Missouri together, welcomed the New Year in Spain before moving over to land of spaghetti and pizza.

Michael Sam and Vito Cammisano have been posting pictures of themselves during their European vacation. Sam, who stated that his teammates at Missouri have known of his orientation since the start of the 2013 season, posted several photos from their trip, including one of the couple inside the Coliseum. The most recent, posted on January 7, Sam's 25th birthday, is a pic featuring the view from the top of St. Peter's Cathedral.

He captioned the pic, "What a beautiful view from the top of St. Peter's Basilica!!! Happy 25th birthday to me."

A friend of Cammisano confirmed Michael Sam and Vito Cammisano's engagement via Instagram. Her post stated that he was "off the market" and that he is getting married, reports TMZ.
