Its official, Micahel Sam and Vito Cammisano are now engaged

The former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman just tweeted today about his experience in "popping the question" to Cammisano.

"@Vitcamm Thank you for saying yes," as he personally confirmed reports that he and Cammisano are soon planning to tie the wedding knot. The standout college athlete shared a photo of himself getting on bended knees at St. Peters Basilica - one of the largest church's in the world - in Vatican City Friday highlighting his tweet with several diamond ring emojis.

Sam made headlines around the world when he came out earlier this year, and even more when he kissed his boyfriend Vito on live TV. The football defensive end may have sparked another controversy, by proposing his boyfriend from what is known as one of the holiest Catholic sites.

TMZ has tagged the proposal "an act of defiance" earlier this month, given that the Catholic Church is opposed to same-sex marriage. Page Six and TMZ, reported before that Sam and Cammisano had gotten engaged during a visit to Europe, where they had reportedly been vacationing since December 30.

"I think if someone wants to spend the rest of their lives with another person, by all means, do that," Sam said. "It's all about equality," Sam said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired last month.

Sam and Cammisano's engagement news comes at the time of Pope Francis' visit to Philippines. Pope said in his speech today, "The family is threatened by growing efforts on the part of some to redefine the very institution of marriage."

Sam expressed his excitement by posting a photo of the proposal with the message, 'Thankyou for saying yes.' The couple met when Sam was a freshman at Mizzou, during one of his first college parties.

Cammisano too followed up with his own post-proposal pic in when he's happily sporting his ring just seconds later.
