American Horror Story Actress Jamie Brewer Walks For 'Role Models Not Runway Models' Campaign, Becomes First Model With Down Syndrome To Walk NYFW [PHOTO]

Actress Jamie Brewer of "American Horror Story" fame recently made history this Thursday by being the first model with Down syndrome to walk the New York Fashion Week runway. Brewer was taking part in designer Carrie Hammer's "Role Models Not Runway Models" campaign, which is meant to empower working women everywhere and provide professional clothing with a contemporary fit.

According to the Daily Mail, Hammer stated of her campaign, "I called up my existing clients who were all incredible women and one of them happened to be a doctor and a sex therapist who happened to be in wheelchair. It was never intended to be this incredible statement."

But a powerful statement it was, especially with Brewer in the picture. According to the New York Daily News, Brewer said of her participation, "Young girls and even young women [see me] and say, 'Hey, if she can do it so can I.' It's a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are and showing who they are."

Today.com reports that Hammer reached out to Brewer due to an e-mail she received from Katie Driscoll, co-founder of the nonprofit "Changing the Face of Beauty." The organization encourages the media to include people with disabilities, and Driscoll's daughter Grace was born with Down syndrome.

Driscoll reached out to Hammer, and asked if she could include a role model for Grace in her fashion shows. Driscoll stated, "I explained to her how important it is for my daughter to have role models like [Brewer] to see that [anything] is possible." Naturally, Brewer was a great fit. Hammer describes her as "an activist for intellectual disabilities; she is a writer and artist and amazing actress."

And now for a bit of fashion talk - what was Brewer wearing? Hammer stated, "'American Horror Story' is dark, scary, bewitching so we had to go with black and Jamie has a beautiful body with a teeny waist and curves and we went with an A-line." Brewer approved of the design, and stated, "It's amazing; it's really neat. Many women have many sides to their personality, this dress fits...mine. I am honored to be in it."
