Scarlett Johansson Confirms 'Ghost In The Shell' Live Action Movie Production To Begin Early 2016

Dystopia is certainly popular these days with "The Maze Runner," "Divergent," and "The Hunger Games" all exploring different futuristic worlds.

One thing they're missing however, is a cyberpunk artificial intelligence police force.

Fans of this particular genre will get their fill when the "Ghost in the Shell" live action movie is released in 2017. Any people worried that the project would continue its extended period of development can now rejoice as lead actress Scarlett Johansson confirmed this week that filming will begin early next year.

"It's happening. It will be shooting the beginning of next year, so I think we start production January or February and it's me and Rupert [Sanders]; and that's all I know," said Johansson (via Collider).

Johansson updated Collider about the project while discussing her role as Black Widow in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," which is set to hit theaters on May 1. It would be fair to say the actress is no stranger to action roles as she's appeared in several in the past few years, including international hit film "Lucy."

So far, Johansson is only major actress attached to the film. The film will be directed by "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders. "Street Kings" writer Jamie Moss will be adapting the original manga series by Masamune Shirow.

Although not many plot details are available yet, IMDB describes the plot of the series as follows: "A cyborg cop attempts to bring down a nefarious computer hacker."

For those who are not familiar with "Ghost in the Shell" in its original form, it follows the story of cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi, who was forced to use a full-body prosthesis as a result of a tragic accident as a child. Kusanagi, who will be played by Johansson, is a major for Public Security Section 9, a special-operations task-force fighting against corrupt officials, companies, and cyber-criminals.
