Dolphin 'Superpod' Sighting in San Diego Coastline, 'Truly Spectacular' [VIDEO]

An enormous pack of over 100,000 dolphins were spotted offering a rare sight to a group of tourists off the coast of San Diego last weekend.

The dolphins spanned over seven miles as the video taken on the deck of the ship reveals thousands of dolphins swarm and leap above the waves.

Captain Joe Dutra of Hornblower Cruises of the ship told NBC Bay Area that he came across "super pod" of common dolphins around noon while on his daily tour.

Dutra called the sighting "truly spectacular," as he estimates the superpod to be around seven miles wide and five miles long.

"They were coming from all directions, you could see them from as far as the eye can see," he said. "I've seen a lot of stuff out here... but this is the biggest I've ever seen. Ever."

Sara Wilkin, a marine mammal expert stated the reason of the spectacle could have something to do with an abundant supply of fish and squid.

"They're attracted to the same kind of thing, they might wind up in the same place," Wilkin said.

"They're definitely social animals, they stick together in small groups," she added. "But sometimes, the schools come together."

Another similar sighting of dolphin superpod was earlier this year off the coast of nearby Dana Point and another in March, 2012.
