After more than 20 days, security in upstate New York is back to normal after the New York prison escape of two convicted murders.

As reported by CNN, David Sweat was shot but captured alive on Sunday after weeks of manhunt for him and fellow escapee Richard Matt.

"The nightmare is finally over," said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

"We wish it didn't happen in the first place. But if you have to have it happen, this is how you want it to end," he added.

The police believed Sweat was headed for the Canadian border when he was spotted in a barn during the manhunt after weeks of his New York prison escape.

New York State Police Sgt. Jay Cook did not think twice and shot at Sweat when it was apparent that he could escape and disappear again. Sweat got hit in the torso but was caught alive. No one else was reported hurt.

Cook was lauded and called a hero for his daring lone chase of Sweat as reported by NBC News. People took to Twitter to acknowledge his braveness. Cuomo also extended his congratulations to Cook.

Meanwhile, the family of the Broome County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Tarsia who was killed by Sweat was grateful for Cook's heroism.

"We would like to extend a special thank you to Sgt. Jay Cook for being vigilant when he saw something that didn't look right and going with his instincts," the family said in a statement as quoted by NBC.

Matt, on the other hand, who did the New York prison escape with Sweat was killed on Friday after an encounter with an agent, according to The New York Times. Matt was hit on the head after he refused to lower the arms he was carrying.

With Matt's death and Sweat's capture, authorities and officials were hoping the investigation on the first New York prison escape in the last century would be given light. They promised to prosecute whoever will be proven an accomplice to the New York prison escape. Just last week, another prison employee was charged for allegedly aiding in helping Sweat and Matt escape.
