SHINee's Onew (Lee Jin Ki) is taking on his first starring role in a television drama.

With less than three weeks until the premiere, SHINee's Onew is already gaining attention as Lee Chi Hoon in the upcoming KBS2 drama Descendants Of The Sun.

His character is a bright first-year resident in the department of cardio thoracic surgery of his hospital, who is often taunted by his seniors.

The producers for the drama have complimented the K-pop boy band member on his acting and insist to views that Onew will bring energy to the new series.

"Onew portrays his character very naturally; you forget that he barely has any acting experience," said the producers, as reported by Soompi.

Descendants Of The Sun was written by Kim Eun Sook, who was also the screenwriter for the hit dramas Secret Garden and The Heirs, and Kim Won Seok. Lee Eung Bok and Baek Sang Hoon are directing.

While this is his first starring role, Onew does have experience in front of the camera. He has had several cameo roles in dramas such as Dr. Champ, Athena: Goddess of War, and Pure Love.

Descendants Of The Sun will premiere on Feb. 24 and have a total of 16 episodes. It will air Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:55 p.m. KST on KBS2.
